Tips for picking out the right watermelon
There is nothing worse than cutting a watermelon open only to find that it’s not sweet or mushy. Here are a few tips to help you find the right one.
Start by checking the weight. A good watermelon should feel heavy for its size. That usually means it’s full of juice and nice and ripe.
Look for the field spot on the rind. This is the spot where the melon sat on the ground while growing. A creamy yellow field spot is a great sign. It means the watermelon had time to ripen and develop sweetness.
Oval watermelons often have big black seeds. Round ones are usually seedless. But even seedless watermelons can have a few tiny white seeds inside.
Another easy tip is to tap the watermelon. A ripe one will sound deep and hollow, kind of like a drum. That sound means it’s juicy and ready to eat.
Skip watermelons with shiny skin, soft spots, or big dents. These are signs it might be overripe or damaged. The best watermelons are firm, dull in color, and free of bruises.
